movies galore

i've been watching a lot of movies lately and there have been quite a few great ones. (trailers posted below)

finally got to see Saw V. i was pretty disappointed really. four was okay, and five just seemed like filler to me. it might mean the next one is going to be great b/c you have all this background, but . . . eh.

maid of honor.  yes, i know - totally chick flick, but it was good.  kinda sent me into a whole whirlwind, but was still cute.

lets see, after that was bucket list.  good movie.  great concept, and to actors i love... but they didnt seem to mesh to me in the movie.  maybe they weren't supposed to. i dunno.    but definitely worth the rent.  everyone has that list... dont wait until you're out of time to scratch things off.

i believe the next flick was shutter.  I wanted to see this in theaters, but never made it.  i wasn't in love with it.  great concept, and i loved the cast.... just was missing something.  if you can get it at redbox, cool - but not worth much more than the buck-a-roo.

next up was midnight movie.  i got a facebook message from ball state alum that they were having a premier for midnight movie and i booked my seat right away. its a bigfoot entertainment film, which is where my cousin fills a ceo chair.  had to check it out.  after seeing saw and being let down, this was great!  proud of ya kacy.  screenings in theaters soon...  its a great B horror flick that has great music in it.

tonight i redboxed the strangers.  ive seen a lot of movies that are weird and whatnot... but this one freaked me out more than i think any movie has in decades.  the score was great.  acting was pretty believable.  freaked me the frick right out.  im good now... but its one of those movies you wont ever forget and it'll wake you up in the middle of the night.  love it.

Saw V... kind of.

one of the ads that i build each week is for great escape theaters. i received an email this morning wanting to ad a Saw V time to their listing for thursday night (early viewing) at ten o'clock. though it was too late to get it in their ad, i however was excited to see it!! let me just say i dread going to the theater. i used to kick and scream as a kid when we went – it makes me sick. HOWEVER... i can't wait to see this film.

tonight i buggied over the the theater, bought my ticket and chilled in the car for a bit. watched the high schoolers tailgait. amusement to say the least. i find a seat in the theater. watch the filler and previews and wha-lah... MOVIE! sweet. about fifteen minutes in, theres switch reel signal and then something is going on upside down and backwards. that rolls for about 5 minutes and they stop the film. [we sit.] up and running again (though we missed something cos it didnt make sense) for about ten minutes and there was literally a burn mark and then the film started melting. [we sit.] [we sit.] [we sit.] then they tell us they can't restart it and its time for us to go home. they did give our 8.75$ back.

STILL no clue how it ends :)

stay tuned... i WILL see it by the end of the weekend! lemme know if you wanna go with.

rebel run weekend - part 1

- friday -

BEAUTIFUL day. headed out to fairmont to catch the early in-flow of rides at the james dean run. more than i expected for early on a friday. caught some photos. trying to get a few for lounge. met some interesting characters, whom had rides with much more character. i'm still not able to pick out exact years, and its bugging the bajeebs outta me. (note to self.) after day one – this is what i have to say

(1) mercs are hit or miss... more on the miss.
(2) fords had a sexy quality about tham that is so not there anymore
(3) a truck done right is stunning
(4) flat finish adds character
(5) be smart about your stripes
(6) 55 chevy is still one of my favorites
(7) converts still dont do much for me
(8) historic is cool, custom is captivating
(9) don't effin' touch the car doof
(10) i caught slim to none useable photos today

on another note - hope to catch voodoo kings tomorrow in gas city.

its going to beautiful this weekend. hop on I69 and check out the show.

a few random music thoughts

thought i'd take the lead from rock the planet this morning.

00. death magnetic. – had mentioned eariler in my blog the album. that i thought i had a frightening observation about metallica that i wasn't ready to share. i'm glad i didnt. all thoughts of that are gone.... tremendous album. captivating lyrics. dark chonky riffs. snare buzz. ...bass. the growl. chicago 2009 baby!

01. i miss good live djs on the radio. voice tracking is both obvious and causes preset flippage

02. classic.

03. after hearing the news of the plane crash that injured travis barker and dj am friday night, my first thought was that we lose too many people in plane crashes. however,  that was quickly wiped away when 104.1's Amanda Rollen babbles on and says - right out loud - that she doesn't know who perry ferrell is.
...am i just old??

04. theres some intelligent hip hop goin' down in indy as of late. check it.

05. ac/dc. lets round up. $100... seriously??? i'll spin their vinyl collection for free at my house. c'mon over. i'll only charge $25 cover :)

06. dusting off old albums. is a re-experience. try it. im not a fan of greatest hits albums, but the cars greatest hits keeps getting spun.

07. fellow blogger cwade makes mention of this article, and i thought it was worth mentioning. 'America Isn't Very Rock 'N' Roll Anymore' - Duff McKagen

i said a few! :) more to come.

new release babble

i'm not saying that i'm the worlds biggest fan, and i'm not saying that i dont give a shit. what i am saying is that i'm excited for September 12th. yes, i've heard a lot of it, and no, i do not own anymore of it than i got from paying my metallica club dues. today they released the video for the first single. i got chills at one point of it about 2/3 of the way thru and you would have thought i was sitting on the bus, scrunched down with my headphones on listening to puppets back in the day. why the chills? i realized that even though im thirty-something, i'm still overly psyched to go to the record store, the day of release, and purchase the newly distributed album. i wish more people were the same way. sometimes the new technology we have available both amazes and pisses me off at the same time. everyone wants to be the first, everyone has to have it. i can see where the hunt of getting it first may be the same as my anticipation of the purchase... its probably the goody-goody in me, i dunno. (there was one release earlier this year that i was psyched to have and passed on when i got it – but have since deleted it and wont hear it again until i purchase it.... if it ever gets released. saying that, i guess i'm a bit of a goody-goody hypocrite.) i guess its just different ways of looking at things and levels of interpretation. enough soapboxing. just wanted to basically say that i'm excited for the album and disappointed in a lot of people.

the album.

i miss them.

not only do i miss the large, vivid artwork, i miss the process of putting on an album on the first track, doin' your thang and loving damn near everything until it ceases in spinning. it seems that we're getting back to the days of the single.... yet artists still rushing up a full albums worth of material to meet some deadline set by the business to make goal for the quarter.... possibly not allowing the artist do the damn thing their way, at their speed, with the quality that they're happy with. so you get some good tracks with a lot of filler before, after and in between. maybe its that some people only have one or two great tunes... and thats cool. the past is full of some classic one-hit-wonders. but it seems like theres not much depth to what we've got out right now. a song here or there... a follow up that might rock.... but not much to identify this time with music.

this brings me to the new metallica album coming out. i've heard the live version of cyanide and the day that never comes was released yesterday. everyone knows i'm a metallica lifer, and i'll find the good in most of the tracks they lay down. they're working with rick on this one and i'm psyched to see how it is. yesterday i had a frightening observation, that i think i'm going to keep to myself until i hear the album as a whole, but i'm excited, curious, and skeptical at the same time.

another thing i'm excited for... WADAPLU by the mudkids.

so... start to finish... complete albums.
what can your recommend for people to check out?

be great and create.

most you've spent on tickets? for what show?
metallica millennium show and woodstock '99 were both up there

in today's world - whats your ideal price for a concert ticket?
i like it simple. i just want to experience music. i can do with out all the flare and who-ha. i get that the crew gets paid. hm... shot in the dark - lets go forty. not the 80/90/over 100 that they are now for the big guns. .

figment

a few years ago i was introduced to a friend of a friend who had heard a lot about me for a number of years – yet never met me. we had a joke that he had begun to to think of me as a figment of our mutual friends imagination. over the years we've formed our own friendship - odd, none the less friendship. yesterday – randomly – we co-exist for a moment in time and it was great. even better –– something else came out of that moment in time. i had a realization i haven't had in many many years. long enough that i had forgotten about it. i enjoy being a friend. i suck at it a lot, but i try. i try to listen. i try to make even the slightest hint of a smile appear, i try to help where i can. yesterday while talking to my friend, who ive picked up and dusted off a few times, i realized thats when i feel like i'm actually breathing in this world.

touching [repost]

my friend rusty posted this today and it hit me, so i thought i'd share.

In spite of any drama you go though.... in spite of any bad breaks and deals you have had to endure, in spite of all the hard times that so many of Us go through and are going through now...there is ALWAYS SOMEONE IN YOUR CORNER. Lean when you need to.

And We never forget why We do this and who We are.

If there is one piece of unsolicited advice I would be happy to give you, it is this:

'Do 'You' fearlessly and without regret. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you.

'

Thanks for believing in Us. We're just getting started...

'We Are Dynamic And People Like Us'

'We Are Dynamic And We Love You.'

Respect and Grace,

Rusty

fastlane

i dont think its a secret that i'm a fan of vehicles. downright point blank - they're sexy. cliche i know. but... the lines. the power. the art. the sound. all of it. muscle cars. custom cars. sports cars. race cars. classic cars. trail vehicles. there was a series out a few years back that used a lot of fine looking rides and incorporated it with great film work, excellent color, great music, humor and some decent plots centered around the candy store. it aired on friday nights at eight or nine. it was ryan, chad and myself hangin' – kick back some beverages of choice, playin' chess (which eventually turned into intoxicated sorry and drunken jenga) and the teevee dialed in on Fastlane. after a season and a half it got pulled. practically vanished. it resurfaced a few weeks ago on dvd and i saw it as a must buy. its been sitting on my kitchen counter since i bought it. i was afraid i was going to ruin those memories.... especially if the show wasn't what i remembered it being. never fear – popped it in this weekend. it was all still there but my two friday night buddies. check it.

video time warp - metal(ish)

POISON - Fallen Angel ('88)
Open Up And Say Ahhh.... huge album in my life. everything from the cover art to the last note of bad to be be good. i can remember riding around in mom's 1982 two-toned blue chevrolet caprice, thumbing the cassette into the player, trying to convince her that it wasn't going to make me do drugs and get thrown in jail.  watching dust shift as i was slammin' down the drum fills on the broad blue dash in front of me - the world seemed to make more sense.

BON JOVI - Wanted Dead or Alive ('86)
i watched it – and i wanted it. i wanted it all. i wanted to be on the road. i wanted to see the day to day. i wanted to help make the show happen. i knew it was long - i knew it was ugly, but i wanted it. i never wanted to be on stage... but i wanted to help those that were up there giving it their all day in, night out

SKID ROW - 18 and life ('89)
i was thirteen or fourteen when i heard this the first time. at that point, i couldnt wait to be eighteen. forget sixteen and wheels... i wanted to be eighteen so i could be out on my own.... doing things my way.... away from the rules and their roof... i look back now and i was the good kid, with a great mom. all i really wanted to do was be loved for who i was. Sebastian Bach's voice on that album took me away if only for a second.

BEASTIE BOYS - No Sleep 'til Brooklyn ('86)
i just remember seeing their videos in the eighties when we were sneaking mtv since we weren't supposed to watch it. my sister and i just sat there saying "What IS This???" mine was in a good way; hers – not so much. i was ten. at recess jimmy, nathan, myself and a few others would jam to anything that had a groove beat.

GUNS N' ROSES - It's So Easy ('87)
wearing my keds – no laces, this album and i walked for miles. we mowed the lawn. we rode in the third from the back seat on the right of the yella-fella. this album was a definite no-no. there were skulls on the cover – five of them. obscenities. drugs. arrests. hid that gn'r tshirt for a looong time. even washed it at a friends house.

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES - send me your money ('90)
my grandma was this lil older lady who was always very involved in the church. the teevee worships that were on back in the day infuriated her to no end. Reverend Send-Me-Your-Dollar is what she called them. lights...camera...revolution is still an album that gets brought out on road trips and after a crap-a-fied day.

METALLICA - One ('88)
1989 – they tried to ignore it when i picked up puppets from the rack.  the cover art - i had to have it.  had no idea what it would sound like.  i sat on the bus, slunk down, knees on the seat in front of me, i clunked the tape in my walkman not having a clue what was about to happen.  the was one of the best rides to school – ever!  not long after that i caught eye of the video for One.  the imagery, the lyrics, thought. my life has never been the same.

capitals.

. . . as in letters – not cities.

i've gotten a few messages since i started blogging, and several over the years about my incorrect grammar and lack of capital letters.  i'm not an english major, and i dont really remember having much grammar in school... but i write quickly, and i write how i think.  it is what it is.  honest and raw.

as for the the capital letters – they just annoy me.  flat out.  distracting even.  they stand out.  things that stand out should be things of importance... and where as the beginning of new spewage of text may be important to some, it is not to me.    my friend is creative with the capital letters though.  he throws them in middle of words, he uses them in places that they matter.  that i love.

so, lesson:
capital letter = take note.
BOLD/ITALICS = they're will be a pop quiz later.

Thanks for reading :)

true.

the guy you see at the right...  truly a great person.  he'd give you the shirt off his back, without you asking, if he thought you might need it.  he's one of the only friends i still hang with from high school.   he works hard. he's got a huge heart.  always looking for a good time. he's always there.  he's helped me move countless times - including driving a box truck back thru the mountains in a blizzard. the roadtrips... the concerts... the races... and this weekend – he's helping me me (more like i'm helping him i guess) finish my garage.  i owe him a lot, yet he just shrugs and accepts nothing in return.  the next few hotbox's and covers are on me grandpa! :)   much love, and thanks for being such an amazing person –– thru everything.  one day it will be amazing and you'll find that they don't always finish last.  you deserve the best.

destination unknown

its a good thing today is sunday night and not last thursday, even friday.   i went on a drive earlier today that was about two hours.  made myself pull it in the garage b/c gas is so expensive but clearly wasn't done.... went on another one that was damn near three hours.  the two were separated by the swimming olympic trials.  if work wasn't on the schedule for tomorrow – im not sure how far i would have gotten.

temperature was perfect.  radio was decent. yes - radio... just letting it scan until something clicked with what i was thinking about.  lots of older stuff this trip.  pretenders, lipps inc., don mclean, skid row, prince, ll cool j, mad season, boys ii men, ac/dc . . .

i drove no where.  big circles around little circles and a loop back to switch it up and circle somewhere else.  tomorrow is huge.  its my first day having the whole north office to do design work for.  i'll have the help of a girl downtown for mondays and tuesday, but the rest of the week, its yours truly.  i'm not sure if thats what i cant get my head away from or if its things going on with friends.... but as much as i drove... it wasn't clearing up.  but i could have driven forever.  i wanted to drive forever . . .

what i do know...
like they say say in elizabethtown - "some music needs air - roll down your window."

musicians with skills.

the music business sucks.

okay, so i can't say that from personal experience, but i can tell you that i'm frustrated seeing extremely talented musicians working a day job, sometimes a night job too, to live.  they live that way because they love music and will do what they need to in order to do what they love.  mad respect for that.  my issue: the non-talented, everyone-sounds-the-same, i'm-blowing-my-cash, no-hearted, i've-got-a-record-deal 'talent' that have gotten record deals or "made it big" (hate that phrase) for whatever reason.

now with the way things are, anyone can get their stuff on a cd and distributed.  thats do-able change.  but touring, promo and merch... thats a lot of pocket lint.  and a lot of times, you cant give up that day (and night) job to do all that yourself no matter how much you try.  how does it change? can it change without a money-grubbing-untrustworthy-deeppocket label?   so what do you do to get noticed sans label? why are some of the most talented individuals i've met in a long time not getting picked up?  its not for lack of effort.  its not for lack of talent.  its not for lack of contacts.  is it because they don't have a 'niche?'

it frustrates me because i listen to the radio and nothing stands out.  its beginning to sound like the teacher off the peanuts cartoons.  whahwhamwhaaaaaaaawhah. it frustrates me because i know that cats like dave borla and chris scianni (dangerman / the secret resistance) and rusty redenbacher (mudkids / lazarus)  have talent everyone should get an earful of.  thats just to name a few.  the music.  the vocals.  the heart.  the loyalty. the everything.   maybe i'm biassed.  i dont know.  and sure its all in opinion.... but i believe in these guys.

music business as a whole has been whack for a while, then the internet happened, and the whole thing is a struggle and combuzle.  radio is no different.  more music - less talk.  yes, theres more music, but they just have more rotation of the songs that i didnt want to hear in the first place.  do that - you may say iPod.  i do use it - when i work out or when i travel, sometimes at work.  thats how i can listen to talent - that honest to god talent.  in my car, its usually radio just in anticipation of hearing something that stands out above the rest.

im sure there is no answer, and not being a musician, i'm not sure why it frustrates me so much. i've covered states to pay that $5 cover to see talent i enjoy.  to support.  it kills me not to be able to do it for everyone at every show.  if you've got something you believe in - something you love to listen to... let me know.  send me a link... send me a file... always love to listen to new stuff.  any genera.

jobbyjob

things in the media industry are rarely stable - job wise with younger people coming up and technology changing.  you learn, or you get gone.  its becoming more apparent than every now with the way the economy is right now.  gannett - the parent company of the indianapolis star is making a lot of changes.  newspapers are fighting story and ad to keep alive it seems and they're restructuring . . . a lot.  its scary when you see so many things shift at once and you wonder if you're next.  when you're gut is telling you something repeatedly you take notice, ya know?  so i'm approaching with caution.  i've cut a lot of things out for the summer... big concerts, road trips, california trips (maaaaan i want to catch the zeromind slims show!) ... just stuff.   you try to adapt.  i miss my west coast friends. its been a long time.

trying to learn.
trying to save.
trying to breathe.

something's going down, and i'm trying to be ready.

triangle.

i have met a lot of people.
i have have a lot of acquaintances.
i have few friends.

i've always kind of been that way.  i love meeting people – a people person i am not. friendships are picked very carefully.  downside to that – i pick a few and seem to strangle them until theres no ship left to friend with.  there are a few die-hards (love ya!) that have stood by for years!  its taken thirty-two years... but i'm learning more about myself and more about other people and figuring out how important having people in your life is.  i've tried to do a lot of things alone, and well, without people that you care about in your life, its lonely.  i have a huge heart so lonely doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

today, my friend christy shared her lunch hour with me while we ate at the way of the sub.  yummy.  we only work a few minutes apart and neither of us are great about taking a lunch away from our desks, so its nice every now and again when we rip away from what we're doing and breathe outside air for a few minutes.   i've known christy since we were in high school.  we played the triangle together in marching band.  chuckle if you will... but damn we played a mean triangle!  our lives have taken totally different paths over the last 15 years, we've lost touch here and there, but its always great to catch up with an friend.

across the country my friends are scattered from the left to the right.  those friends i dont have the pleasure of having lunch with, so there needs to be more of an effort made to enjoying the company of my friends that are near.  so, of you i ask this - call a friend of choice and make plans to share some time.

day one

looks like i'm jumping on the bloggy bandwagon.  i've got a lil to say, and hell, why not say it here.   can't guarantee it's going to be interesting and uplifting all the time, but its not going to be a whoa-is me either.  we'll see how long i stick with it.  comment back - good and bad.

today i dont have much more to say other than we've lost too many people in 2008, this weekend's most recent being scott kalitta and george carlin.  crazy.  im sure both names will resurface in a few days when i get used to this blog thing-er-ma-jiggy.

until then, be great, and create.
